When the  coronavirus epidemic reached Gilgit-Baltistan in March, young Dr. Osama Riaz was deployed to the Scouting and Square Quarantine Center in Jaglot. Dr. Osama, who was on duty with limited security measures, fell victim to the plague a few days later and was found unconscious in his room one morning.

Gilgit-Baltistan was hit by panic before the corona virus outbreak earlier this year. Thousands of people in this mountainous region were returning from abroad, especially from countries affected by the epidemic. This situation was no less of a challenge for the Gilgit-Baltistan government and the health department.

Panicked people did not allow quarantine centers or isolation centers to be set up near settlements. The medical staff was so frightened that their faces were filled with despair. Discovering a cure for the coronavirus, which spreads fear around the world and adversely affects all walks of life, has little to do with diagnostic and precautionary measures.

The march began with new difficulties for the mountainous region due to the corona virus. For foreign nationals, a screening center was set up at Jaglot on the outskirts of Gilgit, from where suspected patients were transferred to an isolation center at Square Gilgit.

Dr. Osama Riaz, a young man who completed his medical education and the first phase of his specialization, was assigned to the Screening and Square Quarantine Center at Jaglot. Dr. Osama, who was on duty with limited security measures, fell victim to the plague a few days later and was found unconscious in his room one morning.

As soon as the family found out, they rushed him to the hospital, where doctors saw the first coronary patient in his profession. Dr. Osama Riaz, who had been in a life-and-death struggle on a ventilator for several days, later died. Thus, Dr. Osama Riaz became the first victim of the corona virus in Pakistan. Since then, a new spirit of service has emerged among doctors across the country, especially in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Dr. Osama Riaz's father Muhammad Riaz says: 'Sons are known for their fathers. My personality is known because of my son. May Allah accept the martyrdom of my son and save us all from this plague.

Muhammad Hanif, District Support Manager for People's Primary Health Initiatives for Gilgit, was also on duty with Dr. Osama. He says that in the early days of the Corona epidemic, surveillance was entrusted to Dr. Osama Riaz. In addition, Dr. Osama Riaz was given the responsibility of screening those coming from abroad, due to which they were transferred to isolation centers. They would reach out to patients for first aid and examination.

Gilgit-based journalist Manzar Shugri contracted the corona virus and remained in hospital for several days. He says that when he was on oxygen, he saw a young doctor standing with him for service. "If I am alive today, it is the role of doctors, nurses and ward cleaning staff after Allah," he said.

Manzar Shugri further says: “Osama Riaz was the first Pakistani doctor to be martyred due to Corona virus. After him, the morale of the doctors of Gilgit-Baltistan did not diminish but increased.

Doctors volunteered to work in areas where the virus had spread. He went to these areas and waged a struggle against Karuna in which he succeeded.

According to Mohammad Hanif, Karuna is now widely spread across the country. "We must try to bring our habits and traditions or social values in line with the guidelines of government agencies and the health department so that the sacrifices made by the paramedical staff, including Dr Osama Riaz and all the doctors, are not in vain." We can get rid of this disease by making a positive change in our attitudes.

The story, based on charcters trying to stem the spread of the Corona epidemic, is part of the "Determined Pakistan" campaign. Its publication and production of Dashboard PK . The students who were part of Pakistan Peace Collective's documentary film training program played a key role in bringing to the fore such courageous and determined characters and their hard work.
